Concrete Wall FAIL

A safety wall to protect night-time road workers was erected on a 70mph motorway in China – but drivers had no idea it was there, and the inevitable happened. It’s surprising, obviously, because China has a good pedigree in the wall-building department. But this one was ill-conceived, to say the least. The wall was a perilously sturdy one and measured about five-feet high. However, there were no warning signs or lights to tell drivers zooming along the highway that their path was blocked. Dozens of cars smashed into the wall in Xian, Shaanxi province, western China, which workers astonishingly kept rebuilding after each impact. Now the furious drivers are suing the road officials responsible. One survivor, Zou Tieqin, 42, recounted how he narrowly escaped serious injury. He said: ‘I had my family in the car and I suddenly saw the wall in my headlights. I braked but it was too late and I went straight through. ‘We were saved by our airbags but when we got out of the car we saw lots of other vehicles piling in. Some weren’t so lucky. ‘The people responsible cannot get away with this and we are demanding compensation.” w/ photos

Old Woman Walks 3-Miles A Day To Get Free Burger

Centenarian Catherine Reddoch makes an hour-long daily trek using her zimmer to munch her way through a free cheeseburger. For more than 20 years, the canny Scot has rolled up at her local Matamata branch of McDonald’s on New Zealand’s North Island. And she’s become a bit of a celebrity since the fast food chain erected a plaque in her honour above her favourite table, dubbed Cat ‘s Corner, where she holds court every lunchtime. Catherine has been making the two-hour round trip from her retirement flat since her husband Neil, who served in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in World War II, died in 1989. The couple had left Scotland the year before, but Neil passed away from an injury he suffered serving his country. Now at 11am each day, Bellshill-born Catherine, known as Cat to her many friends, reaches for her walker and sets off for the town centre. And she places the same order every day – a cheeseburger with no salad or relish, and a hot chocolate. That’s more than 8,000 cheeseburgers and hot chocolates. Catherine said: “I love my cheeseburger, just the cheese and the meat. “I don’t have any sauces on it, just plain. And I never have to pay for it – maybe that’s why I like it.” Her mile-and-a-half each-way pilgrimage takes her around an hour, with stops to chat to friends and watch the world go by.” w/ photo

Treadmill Keeps Man And His 4-Legged Friend Healthy

An Iowa senior citizen has found a way to stay in shape and at the same time bond with his best friend, his beloved Boston Terrier. The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee, Iowa, is home to 95 spry senior citizens. One of these residents is an exercise crazy canine by the name of Miss Casey. Miss Cassey’s workout partner, the decidedly slower 86-year-old Bud Karli, can be found most days on the exercise room’s treadmill. Karli joked that he has to work to keep up with Miss Casey. Karli said when he moved to the retirement community five years ago, he was worried that his beloved four-legged companion would not be able to adjust to apartment living. “I thought, I’ll make things easier for the exercise by teaching her to ride on a treadmill,” Karli said. Karli said at first, Miss Casey did not take very well to the treadmill. “I held her in my arms and let her feet drag on the belt,” Karli said. He did this off and on for a few weeks. But after working to train her, Karli heard nothing but the happy sound of little paws.” w/ photo + video
