World’s Oldest Living Woman

Georgia great great grandmother Besse Cooper got a visit from Guinness World Records to certify her as the world’s oldest living person. Surrounded by family, 114-year-old Cooper accepted a plaque during a small ceremony at a Monroe nursing home on Thursday. She has previously credited her longevity to minding her own business and not eating junk food, as well as spending a lot of time outside. Her son, 75-year-old Sid Cooper, said previously that relatives never imagined she would live to be the world’s oldest person. Cooper became the oldest living person after the death of Eunice G. Sanborn of Texas on January 31, 2011. That’s according to the Los Angeles-based Gerontology Research Group that certifies supercentenarians – people who are 110 or older.” w/ photos

Top 10 Reasons Why Opium Poppy Changed The World

“Papaver Somniferum, the Opium Poppy, has been considered one of the most influential, as well as interesting things in the world for thousands of years. For those unfamiliar with it, the poppy produces opium, the euphoric painkiller that is the starting point for heroin. Depictions of the plant have been traced back to the Sumerians of 6,000 years ago. The beautiful flower has been worshiped as a gift from the gods, and just the same has been feared for its potential to destroy millions of lives. Rather you see them as divine, or quite the opposite, it’s hard to argue how much influence they’ve had in our world. Here are ten particular areas that the plant and its drug have dramatically impacted.” w/ photos

Knitted Breasts Made By 91-Year-Old Woman

You might expect your granny to knit you a woolly jumper, but one pensioner has been defying expectations by using her needles to craft amazing knitted BREASTS. Coral Charles-Dunne, 91, from Birmingham, has knitted dozens of the unusual educational tools as part of a project to inform expectant and new mums about breastfeeding. She says spends about two hours creating each of the woolly boobs and makes them in a range of sizes, knitting for up to six hours per day. The knitted breasts are then used by expectant moms to learn techniques for breast feeding… their partners probably use them to create an unusual game of football. Coral first picked up her knitting needles when she was eight, and still knits a range of items in her spare time. “My fingers are busy from six o’clock until midnight every evening,’ she said.” w/ photos

Formula 1 Driver’s Car Taken Apart And Hung

They are renowned for closely guarding the secret inner-workings of their multi-million pound vehicles. But one Formula 1 boss has defied his competitors by allowing an artist to display his team’s $41million pride and joy – suspended piece-by-piece from a gallery ceiling. Nick Fry, chief executive of the Mercedes GP Petronas Formula 1 Team, had no qualms about last season’s MGP W01 car – driven by seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher – being deconstructed. Dutch artist Paul Veroude disassembled 3,200 components and then suspended them on wire. The effect is akin to the car having just exploded a fraction of a second earlier, before being frozen in time. It took Mr Veroude a long time to complete his task, but not as long as it took the Mercedes team to build their car. Engineers at the German manufacturer spent 90,000 hours of design time and 200,000 hours to manufacture the vehicle.” w/ photos
