How To Make Chocolate-Covered Corn Dogs

While trawling the frozen snacks aisle earlier this week, my ever-wandering eye landed upon a gold mine — a mini, oblong, pig-filled gold mine. Mini corn dogs! Perfect for covering in chocolate! Although, I feel that way about pretty much everything, don’t I? As is the case for most things that I cover in chocolate, the ingredients and recipe are significantly cheaper and easier than flying to Korea.” w/ photos

Silencing Celebs?

“Matt demonstrates how he uses an Arduino to make a celebrity-silencing remote control for your TV. By decoding the closed captioning track in the video signal, the Arduino is able to look for keywords such as ‘PALIN’ or ‘KARDASHIAN’ and mute your TV, protecting your poor ears from having to hear about them ever again.” — MAKE

Nature’s Rock Art

Tafoni – you may not have heard the term but the chance are, if you have visited an ocean shore, (or less likely a desert!) that you have seen them with your own eyes. Essentially they are caves (mostly in miniature) and their formation can often result in beautiful patterns. Yet why are they formed in the first place? Found in all types of climates, tafoni are most common in tidal areas and, conversely, in deserts. There is no exact scientific explanation to why they are formed – the jury is still out. However, the number one explanation is that their formation is controlled by a combination of a weathering by salt and the length of time between when they are wet and dry.” w/ photos

McDonald’s S’Mores Pie

“As part of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, McDonald’s Canada introduced a S’mores Pie to their local customers. It wasn’t until today, oddly enough, that we got a further look at the tempting little fast food dessert item. The item follows a similar aesthetic to the brand’s Baked Apple Pie, but consists of layers of marshmallow and chocolate filling. Thanks to some serendipitous food reporting by our new friend Jess out of Western Massachusetts, we get a look at the limited time pie beyond the traditional product shots.” w/ photos
