The Gathering Of The Penguins

Most parents will know the problem. Your back is turned for two seconds and your little one has disappeared into the crowd. Well just be thankful it’s not a crowd like this. This sea of black, white and brown is created by 200,000 king penguins searching for their hungry chicks on the South Atlantic island of South Georgia. And, incredibly given the apparent chaos, the young birds hardly ever get lost – thanks to each having a unique begging call. The scene was captured by German photographer Michael Poliza after the penguins had returned en masse to their home colony for a new breeding season.” w/ photos

100-Year-Old Woman Gets Stripper For Birthday

A woman who said she wanted a male stripper for her 100th birthday party was granted her wish by her family. Clare Ormiston, who lives at Glenfield Residential Home in Wythall, Birmingham, came up with a couple of suggestions when her relatives asked her back in June what she fancied to mark the milestone birthday. ‘The first one was actually “a seat on the moon”,’ the former secretary’s daughter Marguerite told the Daily Mirror. ‘Seeing as that was pretty impossible I said, ‘What about something else?’ and she said “a stripper”. ‘I couldn’t believe it. She’s got a wicked sense of humor – I nearly fell off my chair.’ And the new centenarian’s reaction when a male stripper named Scorpion rocked up to the residential home to fulfill her wish last week? ‘I enjoyed that. It definitely put a smile on my face.” w/ photo

Amrit Bains – Goddamn Thieves

“I think his music foreshadows the future of punjabi music. This is the most raw punjabi track I have heard since the good old days of Kuldeep Manak. When my baby is born, this will be the first thing he will hear.” — gurusaini05

50-Year-Old Tumble Dryer Still Going Strong

Doug Coulson is in a spin over his tumble dryer – which is still going strong after 50 years and more than 15,000 cycles. And during that time, the electric appliance has become more than just about wringing his clothes dry – it has become a piece of history linked to his childhood. Doug, 45, grew up to the sound of the Parnall Auto Dry spinning the contents of his family’s wardrobe in his mother and father’s kitchen where it was used five times a week. He became so attached to the machine, bought in 1959 that when he left home at 18, he took it with him – and it is still alive and kicking at his flat in Southampton, Hampshire. Doug said: ‘It is very basic but I use it around three times a week. ‘It has never let me down, and is still going strong after all these years. ‘I have tried using other machines before at laundrettes but none are as good as my retro one.” w/ photos

Top 15 Incredible Slot Canyons On Earth

“Slot canyons are fantastically narrow gorges that are much deeper than they are wide. Formed by water rushing through sandstone and limestone they can be less than three feet across yet well over 100 feet deep! Hidden away, and with walls that remind one of abstract art, they are like sanctums provided by nature, but they can also be dangerous – even deadly. Notwithstanding, we’ve brought together some of the most interesting and beautiful ones we could find.” w/ photos
