Live Animal Keyrings?

“Keyring ornaments are perhaps the most useless item you’ll ever carry in your pocket or stuff in your purse — but now, thanks to an increasingly popular item being sold in China, it can easily be the cruelest, too. For the price you might expect to pay for some kitschy trinket, Chinese street vendors are selling live animals, permanently sealed in a small plastic pouch where they can survive for a short while as someone’s conversation piece. Apparently, these unimaginably inhumane keyrings are actually quite popular — and worst of all, it’s totally legal.” w/ photos

Man Who Takes Care Of 140 Stray Dogs

For former chef Li Zongwen a man’s best friend is really his dog, as he looks after more than 140 strays in his home in China. Mr Li, 59, has become a dog’s best friend after adopting a number of stray and abandoned pooches. Walkies must be a nightmare and dealing with the poop almost unimaginable because Li takes care of over 140 of the animals in his home in China. Rescued from the streets on the outskirts of the city of Wuhan, they are given a roof over their heads and a meal to eat. The rescued animals like to sit and watch as the former chef rustles up their grub in a big cauldron using a garden spade. Taking care of more than 140 stray canines is no small task and the dog lover couldn’t do the job without support.” w/ photos

Dog Allergic To Grass?

Guiness can’t run through fields or play in the park like most dogs because he is allergic to grass and suffers a violent reaction if he comes into contact with a single blade… The Staffordshire Bull Terrier suffers from an allergic condition so rare there is no name for it. Experts believe that the he has a virulent form of hayfever. If that wasn’t enough for the poor pooch, he is also on a vegetarian diet due to an allergy to wheat, lamb and beef. Guiness was abandoned by his owners in 2008 because they could no longer cope with him. He is currently being looked after by staff at the Blue Cross animal center in Worchester.” w/ photo

Millions Of Dead Fish Turn Up In Marina

It’s been a couple of months since a large group of animals has baffled locals and scientists alike by mysteriously turning up dead, but it appears the trend continues this week in Los Angeles. Millions of small fish, including anchovies, mackerel and sardines, washed up dead in the middle of the night in Redondo Beach, California, in another bizarre mass death that has authorities puzzled and looking for a cause. Boaters woke up this morning to find the dead fish up to a foot deep from the water’s surface at King Harbor Marina, which is about 22 miles south of Los Angeles… Gabrielli suspects that the silvery fish were attempting to escape a red tide, a naturally occurring rapid accumulation of algae in a water column, which will poison fish or starve them of oxygen. What is clear is that it was high winds in the area last night that swept the fish into the harbour, clogging the waterways for boaters. The wall of fish was so thick in spots that boats were unable to move, according to Gabrielli.” w/ photos
