01… Secretariat 1973 – We can’t begin any list of the fastest Kentucky Derby horses without mentioning Secretariat who ran back in 1973. Finishing the race in 1:59.40, the horse and jockey also broke the record at Churchill Downs.
02… Monarchos 2001 – The first fastest horse of the new century, Monarchos ran the track in an impressive 1:59.97 back in 2001. What’s really amazing is that he started the race in thirteenth place!
03… Northern Dancer 1964 – The 60s were known as the love generation, but Northern Dancer was a horse that loved to run. He won the Derby in 2:00 flat, still a very impressive time. The horse was Canadian-bred.
04… Spend a Buck 1985 – Remember the 1980s? While there was a lot happening, one of the major events in the horseracing world was Spend a Buck running the Kentucky Derby in just 2:00.20. He was also named Horse of the Year in 1985.
05… Decidedly 1962 – Last but certainly not least in our list of the fastest Derby horses, we have Decidedly who decided in 1962 to run the Derby in just 2:00.40, winning with 8.70-1 odds!
Kentucky Derby 2014 is coming up soon, and one of the things that’s always exciting about the race is the chance that a new horse is going to break one of the old records.
