Mysterious Atlantic Monastery

“Nine miles off the coast of County Kerry in the west of Ireland there are two small rocky islands peeking out of the Atlantic Ocean. The larger of the two, Skellig Michael, is home to something quite extraordinary – a 1400 year old monastery which only a handful of people get to see each year. As you approach the island there is little, seemingly, to notice. Yet closer inspection reveals the tell tale criss-cross of manmade paths. Who could possibly have wanted to live here – and when? It is thought that the monastery of Skellig Michael was founded at some point in the seventh century and monastic life persisted there for over 600 years. Why it was abandoned is lost in the sands of time but because of the sheer inaccessibility of the island what the monks left behind remained, through the centuries, remarkably intact.” w/ photos

World’s Longest Xylophone

“There were no computer graphics used for the either the ball or the xylophone itself. This is a real mechanism made by a company called Drill Inc. and it actually produced this sound which was recorded at the same time as the filming.” — CelticSocks

Test Tubes Plants

“I have never been much of a fan of cut flowers around the house – it seems to be a family thing as my mother has something of a phobia as well, to the point where she simply cannot countenance them. We both put it down to the fact that although they look wonderful for a day or two then the inevitable starts to happen and they wilt and die. That process takes away the whole pleasure of having had them displayed in their prime in the first place. Perhaps we cannot bear to be reminded of our own mortality – or perhaps we should have learned to throw flowers out sooner. However, this display by Spanish website Artesania Florae really turned my head, combining as it does my dual love of art and science. Plus it does look very much as if these particular plants (name, anyone?) will take root in the test tubes and last a great deal of time. They are, to me, very aesthetically pleasing too.” w/ photos

Robot Surgeon Folds Mini Paper Airplane

“Dr. James Porter, medical director of robotic surgery at Swedish folds a small paper airplane with the da Vinci surgical robot to demonstrate how this device gives surgeons greater surgical precision and dexterity over existing approaches.
