World’s First Interactive Paper Computer

This is the future. Everything is going to look and feel like this within five years,” says creator Roel Vertegaal, the director of Queen’s University Human Media Lab. “This computer looks, feels and operates like a small sheet of interactive paper. You interact with it by bending it into a cell phone, flipping the corner to turn pages, or writing on it with a pen.” The smartphone prototype, called PaperPhone is best described as a flexible iPhone — it does everything a smartphone does, like store books, play music or make phone calls. But its display consists of a 9.5 cm diagonal thin film flexible E Ink display. The flexible form of the display makes it much more portable that any current mobile computer: it will shape with your pocket… Being able to store and interact with documents on larger versions of these light, flexible computers means offices will no longer require paper or printers.” w/ photos

6ft Water Balloon Pop (Slo Mo)

“Watch this one in HD! The slow mo guys are well aware that water balloons are always good in slow motion. In this video, Gav and crew try (and fail many times) to pop a 6ft giant red balloon. Slow motion is between 2500fps and 1000fps.” — theslowmoguys

“I don’t know who Heineken hired as their new marketing person, but they should give them a raise! Heineken designed aluminum bottles that has a cool glow-in-the-dark shooting star design when exposed to black lights in the club. This is all part of their new ad campaign that streamlines the bottle with intelligent designs that improves the drinking experience.” w/ photos + video

Mad Max Electric Bicycle?

I spotted this on the way to work the other day: a bad-ass home made electric vehicle constructed out of various bicycle and scrap parts. What I really love is the Rube Goldbergesque powertrain that speaks highly of ‘using what you have available’ instead of buying new parts. In case you can’t see it in the pictures, what makes this thing move is two car batteries running through a power inverter to produce 120v wall current which then runs an electric drill which turns the geared assembly to move the wheel.” w/ photos

2,000-Year-Old Roman Ship Found

A 2,000-year-old Roman ship in the middle of a plain near the ancient port of Rome has been unearthed by Italian archaeologists. The wooden vessel was found at a depth of 13 feet during repair work on a bridge that links the modern town of Ostia with Fiumicino, where Rome’s main airport is located. Measuring 36 feet in length, the ship is the largest ever excavated near the ruins of Ostia Antica, a port city near the mouth of the Tiber River that rivals the riches of Pompeii. So far, only the right side of the ship is visible. Remains of ropes, used by the ancient Roman sailors, are beginning to emerge.” w/ photos
