100,000-Year-Old Paint Mixing Kits Found

“One hundred thousand years ago, a small group of ancient humans entered Blombos Cave in South Africa to spend a day or two mixing paint. They ground up red and yellow rocks lugged from afar and combined the powder with marrow, charcoal and water, using bones and their fingers to blend the ingredients in large shells. Their task completed, the Stone Age artisans emerged with a fresh supply of pigment for decorating bodies, clothes or surfaces. Some time later, sand blew in and covered their discarded gear, which lay undisturbed until recently.” w/ photos

Little Rock Climber

“Bravely balancing in front of a 2,000ft drop, this 10-year-old girl is reaching new heights in the climbing world. Stella Noble might weigh just four stone and stand only 4ft high, but that doesn’t stop her taking on one of North America’s hardest and most dangerous rock faces. Stunning images show how last month she became the youngest ever climber to conquer the dangerously sheer east face of Longs Peak mountain in the Rocky Mountains – known as The Diamond. To conquer the Diamond – her ‘greatest’ achievement yet – the determined schoolgirl climbed for a grueling 12 hours with her father, Forrest, 43.” w/ photos + video
The Gathering Of The Penguins

“Most parents will know the problem. Your back is turned for two seconds and your little one has disappeared into the crowd. Well just be thankful it’s not a crowd like this. This sea of black, white and brown is created by 200,000 king penguins searching for their hungry chicks on the South Atlantic island of South Georgia. And, incredibly given the apparent chaos, the young birds hardly ever get lost – thanks to each having a unique begging call. The scene was captured by German photographer Michael Poliza after the penguins had returned en masse to their home colony for a new breeding season.” w/ photos

Surgical Robot Peeling A Grape
“A Da Vinci surgical robot was on show at an open event to raise awareness of men’s cancers for Blue September at Southmead Hospital… Members of the public, former patients, prospective patients, staff and GPs all attended the event to try their hand at robotic surgery. Here, urology fellow Ramesh Thurairaja peels a grape. Southmead Hospital was among the first in the country to have a surgical robot for urology.”
