North Korea’s Synchronized Crowds

“North Korea’s famous mass games can be seen in close-up detail for the very first time – after a determined German photographer managed to convince communist party officials to grant him access to the national stadium. The incredible displays feature over 100,000 people in the performing complex routines that include tens of thousands of gymnasts synchronizing movements in line with a background of card-turners who create an ever-changing backdrop. The rapid changes of image sees one card exchanged for another in a swift and synchronized movement that takes hours of rehearsals and detailed choreography.” w/ photos

Mini Waterball Shooter

These are the blasters that suppress targets with harmless water-saturated pellets. The blasters use non-toxic 1/16″ polymer pellets that swell to 150% their original size when submerged in water for three hours. Each blaster’s hopper holds up to 75 pellets, which are loaded and fired one-at-a-time by pulling back and releasing its spring-loaded bolt carrier, striking targets up to 50′ away. Unlike water balloons that merely bounce off targets without ‘detonation’, the pellets burst upon mild impact yet will not litter a yard. This set includes 525 water pellets, providing ample ammunition for target practice or full-scale, backyard battlefield encirclements.” w/ photos

Bat-Eared Foxes

“What big ears you have, my dear. This tiny fox has huge ears that help it to pick out its next meal. What will it be this time – lizard, scorpion, or some tasty bug? But no amount of super-powers can save a potential suitor from the wrath of a domineering father; looks like a little persistence is in order.” — NatGeo

DNA-Certified Premium Seafood?

Restaurants around the world will soon use new DNA technology to assure patrons they are being served the genuine fish fillet or caviar they ordered, rather than inferior substitutes, an expert in genetic identification says. In October, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration officially approved so-called DNA barcoding — a standardized fingerprint that can identify a species like a supermarket scanner reads a barcode — to prevent the mislabeling of both locally produced and imported seafood in the United States. Other national regulators around the world are also considering adopting DNA barcoding as a fast, reliable and cost-effective tool for identifying organic matter. David Schindel, a Smithsonian Institution paleontologist and executive secretary of the Washington-based Consortium for the Barcode of Life, said he has started discussions with the restaurant industry and seafood suppliers about utilizing the technology as a means of certifying the authenticity of delicacies. ‘When they sell something that’s really expensive, they want the consumer to believe that they’re getting what they’re paying for,’ Schindel told The Associated Press.” w/ photo
