Scotch Eggs

A Scotch egg consists of a shelled hard-boiled egg, wrapped in a sausage meat mixture, coated in breadcrumbs, and deep-fried. Scotch eggs are commonly eaten cold, typically with salad and pickles. The London department store Fortnum & Mason claims to have invented Scotch eggs in 1738, but they may have been inspired by the Moghul dish nargisi kofta ‘narcissus meatballs’. The earliest printed recipe is the 1809 edition of Mrs. Rundell. Mrs. Rundell and later 19th-century authors served them hot, with gravy.” w/ photos

Christmas Tree Made From 100 Recycled Bicycles

Most Christmas trees are already green, but this environmentally friendly holiday display in Sydney takes the concept to a new level: It’s made of bicycles that were destined for the recycling yard.  The bicycle tree, dubbed the ‘Tree-Cycle,’ is made of 100 old bikes donated by a local recycling company. The bike frames were spray-painted tree green, while the tires were given a multi-colored makeover to make them look like holiday lights.  And if you thought you spent a lot of time putting up your tree, consider this: It took eight weeks to build the 23-foot-tall Tree-Cycle, which is on display at The Rocks, one of the city’s prime tourist and shopping districts. Even the ‘star’ at the top of the tree is made of bicycle parts — look closely, and you’ll see it’s really just a series of front forks and tires sticking out in each direction.” w/ photos + video

Where Is My Mind? (8-Bit Version)

“So I’ve been writing music in my basement for a few years now. Fight Club was a very influential movie in my high school days [daze] and I loved the song at the end. Since then, I’ve heard it thousands of times and decided to make a chip-tune cover of it for your listening pleasure. I’ve performed this song live on a handful of occasions and it’s always been a favorite. Enjoy!” — TheCrass1984

Chris Voigt started his unique diet on October 1 in an attempt to draw attention to the nutritional benefits of eating the vegetable. As executive director of the Washington State Potato Commission, Mr Voigt hopes his efforts will highlight what a good source of fibre, potassium and vitamin C potatoes are. He is believed to have eaten nothing but 20 potatoes every day for 60 days and claims despite health warnings, has actually lost weight and seen his cholesterol level drop.” w/ photo

World’s Smartest Horse

A 17-year-old thoroughbred gelding in Chino Hills, Calif., is going into the record books, not for the speed of his feet but for the quickness of his mind. The horse in question is Lukas, who is touted as the smartest horse in the world for the many amazing feats he’s been able to master: 35 in all. According to Karen Murdock, Lukas’ owner and trainer, he is able to count and discern different shapes, spell his name and recognize the difference between objects that are the same and those that are different, those that are bigger or smaller than others and a concept called ‘absentness.’ “Lukas knows when something is missing, and that is a skill that was previously only detected in primates and parrots,” Murdock said.  But despite having an extremely high equine IQ, Lukas was absent from the Guinness World Records book until June, when Guinness finally created a record attempt for Lukas that fit in their criteria.” w/ photo + video
